What a Homeowner Can Do for HVAC Maintenance

AC Basics: The Difference Between Air Handlers & Condensers

People often take a heating, ventilation and air conditioning system for granted, expecting it to provide a comfortable indoor environment during the cold winters and humid summers in Lake County, Illinois. Like all finely engineered mechanical devices, heating and cooling equipment requires regular maintenance. Seasonal tune-ups by a professional HVAC contractor ensure that all components are in good condition and that the system functions efficiently. However, there are HVAC maintenance tasks that homeowners can do to maintain their systems throughout the year.

Clean or Change HVAC Filters

Filters capture airborne pollutants and keep them from entering ducts and your living space. When filters become clogged, the system loses efficiency and uses more energy to heat and cool. Dirty filters are one of the main causes of calls for HVAC repairs. Filters should be cleaned or changed approximately every three months. If you have pets or live in an area with a lot of dust, you should change the filter more often.

Keep Outside Unit Clean and Clear of Vegetation

The condenser unit, usually installed outside, must be kept clear of leaves, vegetation and other debris. Over time, dust and debris can coat the fan and condenser coils situated inside the housing, which affects efficiency. Air must flow freely above and around all sides of the unit. Make sure vegetation is at least 2 to 3 feet back from each side. Maintain an opening to allow access to the unit. Sweep leaves, grass and debris from around the housing.

The Importance of Professional Tune-Ups

During a maintenance checkup, the certified professionals of HHerchenbach Mechanical Inc. examine every component of the HVAC system, including:

  • Inspecting and cleaning the condensate line and drip pan.
  • Checking refrigerant levels.
  • Lubricating fans and other moving parts.
  • Shutting down the power to clean coils, fins, fan and housing of the outdoor and indoor units.
  • Checking electrical components and amperage.
  • Inspecting ducts for leaks and testing the pressure through the system.

If we find problems, we recommend solutions to prevent costly repairs later.

Regular maintenance helps reduce energy usage, keeps your system running efficiently and prolongs equipment service life. For more information about the importance of maintaining your HVAC equipment, call the experts at Herchenbach Mechanical Inc. today.
